Retro Computer Drawing

This is a simple pen and paper drawing of a retro computer. It is the first drawing I've done for this learning blog project.

I am planning on practicing drawing regularly. Hopefully through the process of making lots of art I will make progress in becoming a better visual artist. There are tons of examples of other people online seeing stunning improvements in their art skills through regular practice, and I'm curious where my skills can go by putting in time and effort.

I chose a retro computer as my first subject because the general form consists of mostly simple straight lines. It is a nice, gentle introduction to creating the illusion of a 3D object on paper. Man-made technologies like a personal computer can be deconstructed quite easily into some fundamental shapes, like boxes and spheres. I chose to draw just the computer and not a full scene to make it easier for me as a beginner also. Having more objects in relation to each other at different depths would complicate things.

A very common recommendation for learning to draw seems to be to just do it. Draw lots of things. Look at things and re-create them as best you can. This is going to be the bulk of my practice as I learn to draw. I like to google image search various things that pop in my head and just try to emulate them at this point in my drawing journey. As a beginner, it is very helpful to tack on a "drawing" or "art" for whatever I am searching to see how other artists have rendered an object. I am sticking with simple shapes with less lines at this point but I am hoping that complicated scenes and precise perspective drawing will one day be within my grasp. Maybe I will be able to draw from my imagination at some point too.
